A hysterectomy is defined as the surgical removal of a woman's uterus. The procedure can literally mean the survival of a patient that has been diagnosed with uterine cancer. On the other hand, for our patients with severe pelvic pain and heavy, irregular periods, a hysterectomy often means relief from troublesome, and often painful symptoms.
Different types of hysterectomy surgery performed by Moscow Pullman OB/GYN include:
- Vaginal hysterectomy-removal of the uterus through the vagina.
- Abdominal hysterectomy-removal of the uterus through an incision in the lower portion of the abdomen.
- Laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy-use of a laparoscope, a slender tube with a camera at one end, to assist the surgeon during surgical removal of the uterus. The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision at the belly button along with microsurgical tools.
Alternatives to a surgical hysterectomy include medical therapy, endometrial ablation, uterine artery embolization and myomectomy. To select the treatment option and plan that is right for you, talk to your doctor at Moscow Pullman OB/GYN.
